Introduction

Tricot is without a doubt one of my Circle 1 bands. That aspect of the overlapping patterns that fit together? Yup! Lately, they have been putting their writing process on their YouTube channel. Below are some links to see the process for a few songs. From an upcoming album...? Please. 😀

Does Tricot move into the psychedelic realm? When I started listening, I didn't think much. Now I've internalized the patterns more, even though they're heady, as an incredible swirl of ideas that brings one along for the ride and, dare I say it, expands my perceptions & consciousness. That places them even more firmly in "that genre" in my head. And they are so in Circle 1.

Some folks describe them as a mix of pop rock & math rock styles. That fits; their material has a bouncy feel, and they have "pretty sounding" vocals. Yet there is so much more, mixing in complex rhythms, non-standard time signatures, and interesting progressions. At first it was an effort listening to them. That pull under the pop-rock surface kept me activated. So enjoyable, but let's just say I couldn't fall asleep listening to them.

The more I listened, though, the easier it felt falling into those patterns. That's when the mind explodes, in a good way. I reach an altered state of mind!

Another "insight" as I got more and more into their music sounds weird, but I'll try to describe it. In a meta way, they remind me of Rush. Not in music style way. But in a quality that is throughout their music, but never exhibited the same way.

I read that they changed their drummer after their first few releases. Yes, this is related. It was said to be because of "musical differences". I kind of understand. Earlier stuff, with the old drummer, has a bit more aggressive, intense, and "heavier" feel to it. One could say, over time, the change is a maturing, mellowing, or aging. But that is a limited viewpoint. There is an undercurrent or feel throughout, and with the new drummer, it all comes together.

Anyways, that is my experience/perception of them. In the end, I really love the kaleidoscope of music they create.
